Gold medal is the target: collective team effort and a deep roster make Luxembourg strong

With 2 wins in 2 games, Luxembourg’s women national team has won the group B at the FIBA European championship for small countries. On Saturday, the team will face Malta in the semi-finals, the final and game for 3rd place will be played on Sunday.

After 2 convincing victories, Luxembourg has earned the role of the favorite for the rest of the tournament and the gold medal is now clearly the target for our national team. In both games (against Kosovo and Cyprus) the FLBB-squad took an early lead, built the lead and never let the opponent grab any hope of returning into the game.

In 2 games so far, Luxembourg had 47 assists on 66 field goals. 8 different players have scored at least 10 points in a game, this clearly underlines the collective strength which makes it so hard for the opponent(s) to guard our women’s team. From the free-throw-line, Luxembourg has made 29/32 attempts, an incredible 90.6 %. In addition, our women have made 23 shots from long range (3-pointers) so far. The big rotation allows our team to play at a high pace and with an aggressive defense all 40 minutes.

If the team around Nadia Mossong can keep up this collective effort, the gold medal is a very possible goal for Luxembourg. Coach Mariusz Dziurdzia says that the team „showed a great team effort against home team Cyprus on Thursday and now the focus is on showing the same effort once again in the semi-final to qualify for the final on Sunday. »

With 2 games left to be played, basketball fans in Luxembourg are certainly optimistic after watching this national team compete over the last 2 games. The semi-final game against Malta will be played on Saturday at 19:00 (save the date).
