Interview: Ehi Etute talks about her performances and her future

It was the second MVP award for Ehi Etute this season. After winning the JICL MVP award in the women’s LBBL, the young player of T71 Dudelange was able to dominate at the FIBA U18 European Championship and bring home the award of the most valuable player.

Her statistical averages are simply incredible: 31.5 points and 23.3 rebounds, 6.2 steals and 4.3 assists per game!

Etute player her first European Championship when she was 13 years old. Four years later, she was able to make headlines all around the world with her amazing performances.

What will you remember most from this European Championship?

The atmosphere within our team was remarkable. The coaching staff helped us grow as a team, my roommate was Isa (Hamalainen) and this connection helped us on the court. I will definitely remember this great team atmosphere because it helped us compete on the court.

At what point in the tournament did you start believing in a potential finals appearence?

If I am honest, we did not believe in this kind of performance (laughs). After winning the first 3 games, we had some hope to further advance but we always tried to stay humble and look at it game by game. Personally, I always told my teammates not to overreact after every win but then suddenly we won the quarter finals and semi finals and played the finals, it was very special.

After a long season, you participated in the ADIDAS camp and now in the European Championship, will you get time to take a break?

I definitely need some time to recover soon. I think that my largest break the entire season was 3 days so that I am looking forward to going to holidays right now. I might not play 5on5 basketball for at least 2-3 weeks.

What can you say about your individual performances? You made headlines all around the world with your surreal stat lines.

I gained a lot of experience over the last years, also because I was able to compete in the EuroCup with my club T71 Dudelange. These experiences clearly help me a lot right now. I am surprised by the statistics that I was able to finish games with. During the game, I do not really notice how many points or rebounds I have. I was a little bit shocked about the final stat lines and especially about the reactions. I must say that it makes me proud that my performances made so many headlines and this will definitely help me moving forward in my basketball career.

What are your plans for the future?
I will continue to play in Dudelange because I want to finish school in Luxembourg (1ère). After next season, my plan is to go the United States to visit a college. I am currently looking at the different possibilities, nothing is sure yet. At this moment it is difficult to say where I see myself in a few years, the future will show (laughs).
