Sofie Fuglsang Olsen talks about her first year as a professional player

After studying and playing college basketball in the United States, Sofie Fuglsang Olsen started her professional career in the DBBL in Germany with Herner TC.

She averaged 3.5 points per game and 1.5 rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time per game in 21 games total. The season for Herner ended in the first playoff round against the top seed Keltern.

Asked about her first impressions as a professional player, Sofie responds: „I quickly learned that it’s harder mentally than physically. Almost everything you do is focus on and play basketball and therefore if you have a break, you should take it. It was positive how quickly we got along as a team and how we helped us through the difficult days that we had. »

As a team, Herner reached the playoffs but was eliminated in the first round against the top seed Keltern that would go on to win the championship. „Throughout the season, there were a lot of ups and downs for our team, we had some games that we should have won but then also games where we surprisingly won. I played a position that I don’t normally play and that was really difficult for me but I quickly learned that I had to adapt if I wanted to get playing time. Overall I think it was a solid season but a few extra steps we could have avoided to face Keltern in the first round. »

During the season, Sofie was also in action with the women’s national team. „It is a great honor to play for Luxembourg, we played some really good matches during the qualifiers. Personally it was fun to play with players I haven’t seen for years but played with a lot when I was younger. »

What comes after year 1 as a professional player? „Well I am in holidays at the moment (laughs) but I am in talks with my agent and we will try to find the best possible destination for myself in the upcoming season. »
