Sparta beats Zolwer / Gréngewald-men make big step towards promotion

4 games were scheduled on Wednesday-evening in the women’s LBBL and the men’s National 2.

However, the LBBL game between Gréngewald and Basket Esch was cancelled just before tip-off because of the Covid-19 virus.

In the women’s promotion and relegtion group, Sparta hosted Zolwer in the first game in the new Niki Bettendorf gym. The game ended with a 87:67 win for the favorite Sparta from the LBBL, but the game was close until the middle of the third quarter. Carvallo Mongomo scored a game-high 27 points while Laura Henket added 17 points for Sparta, Ophélie Delepierre scored 26 points for Zolwer.


In the men’s National 2, league leader Gréngewald made another big step towards promotion by winning the top game against Bascharage. In a close game, the team of coach Alex Pires came up with an 82:79 win. Barnes (28 points), Henkel (21) and Janssen (16) combined for 65 points to overcome 23 points apiece by Kennedy and Kuhlmann. This victory puts the greens up by 5 points over the direct opponent from Bascharage in the standings. In fact, Bascharage lost the second place in the standings to Zolwer on Wednesday. Zolwer was able to beat BC Mess 98:72. Vic Heuschling (20 points) and Gilles Weis (14) gave Zolwer a huge spark in this game to take the second place in the standings with a 13:6 record.
