On Thursday evening, Luxembourg played the first game of the 2029 FIBA Eurobasket pre-qualifiers at the Coque in Kirchberg (19:30).
In front of 1200 spectators, Luxembourg had a strong finish to win 89:77!
The hosts jumped out to an early lead behind a hot shooting streak, notably Ben Kovac (22 points in the first half). After the first quarter, the FLBB squad led 26:11. Ireland found its rhythm in the second quarter and cut the lead to single digits before Luxembourg was able to end the first half with another run to take a 47:37 lead into the locker rooms.
Ireland stormed back in the third quarter and the game went into the final quarter on a 64:61 lead by the FLBB team. In thrilling final minutes, Luxembourg had the stronger finish and finally won the game.
Ben Kovac was outstanding with 38 points, Clancy Rugg, Malcolm Kreps and Philippe Gutenkauf made big shots late in the game and Oliver Vujakovic added 19 points for the FLBB team. Luxembourg hit 16 threes (43%).
