Marcel Wilbert: „I am helping players to develop their full potential »

The next coaching member we present in an interview is Marcel Wilbert, current National athletics coach.

When did you arrive in Luxembourg? What do you like about the country?

I started my job as an athletic coach at FLBB in January 2020.

When I was a kid my grandmother used to tell me stories about her life in Luxembourg as some of her relatives lived here in former days and she herself worked in Esch/Alzette in the early 60s.
I like the cultural diversity in many ways, and of course “d’Stad“ is one of my personal highlights so far. There’s still so much more to explore in the future.

What are your ambitions/goals at the FLBB?

Developing a performance management and an environment, so that everyone has the opportunity to unfold his full potential, grow as a human being and being successful as an athlete.

What are your main challenges in your coaching mission for the FLBB?

For me as an athletic coach it’s very exciting to support our athletes and teams in maximizing the chance to win games. One of my challenges is to manage and balance performance, availability and adaptability of our athletes as foundation for a better performance in basketball.

How does a work day in your life look like?

Currently I work in the mornings for the German National Badminton Team and prepare the athletes for international competitions and the upcoming Olympic Games.
Training with the young and talented players of the FLBB takes place from afternoon to evening. The focus is on a long-term athletic development: we systematically work on strength and power qualities, plyometrics, movement efficiency and movement skills as well as energy systems development. Furthermore, we develop routines in various areas such as movement preparation, regeneration in terms of optimizing adaptation and injury prevention. Motivation and empowerment through education is another pillar.
In addition to team training we work in individual settings on performance and focus on improving every possible aspect off the court that could potentially have an impact on the court.
Besides, in cooperation with the entire team I create concepts adapted to the needs of the FLBB, with the aim of further development of Luxembourg Basketball.

Can you shortly describe your coaching philosophy?

It’s all about the love for the game. Leave the game in a better place.
