The cup weekend starts on Friday with the cup FLBB finals ( –> Cup FLBB finals on Friday ) . On Saturday, the first semi finals in the LALUX Ladies Cup and in the Loterie Nationale Coupe de Luxembourg are scheduled in the Coque in Kirchberg. Plenty tickets have already been ordered in the presale, but some tickets are still available at the entrance.
Important note: Be aware that the numbers of parking places will be limited because of the Euro Meet and the basketball cup semi finals at the same time. We therefore encourage you to use the public transport.
Program on Saturday:
17:45 AB Contern – Sparta Bertrange (women)
20:15 Etzella Ettelbruck – Gréngewald Hueschtert (men)
In the women’s semi finals, fans and supporters can expect a game on an even level between two teams that have had good seasons so far in the LBBL. Sparta Bertrange has won 12 games and only lost 4 games this season, the team also won the first duell against Contern back in early December with 77:66. With their strong trio Bridget Yoerger, Martha Burse and Jovana Jaksic, Sparta is difficult to handle for every opponent. Furthermore, Lena Mersch is playing at a very high level and is currently in the top 5 candidates to win the JICL MVP award this season ( –> Women’s JICL MVP race (third edition) ). Contern has been a great surprise early in the season when the team of coach Fabienne Fuger sat on top of the league standings for a while. With a record of 10 victories and 5 losses, the team is still on a position that will allow to play a play-off series at home in the 1/8-finals. Francesca Wurtz and Zoé Richards have proven to be a dynamic duo and the team can make plenty of outside shots on a good night.
In the men’s semi finals, Etzella will host league newcomer Gréngewald. The team from Ettelbruck has a record of 12 wins and 5 losses in the LBBL, Gréngewald enters the game with a record of 6 wins and 11 losses. In fact, both teams recently added a new professional player and therefore might need some time to find their rhythm as a team. While Terry Winn made his debut for the « Greens » last weekend, Timothy Lamont played his first game for Ettelbruck last Sunday. With Philippe Gutenkauf, Etzella can count on one of the league’s best JICL players who is also in the top 5 candidates to win the JICL MVP award this season. Newcomer Gréngewald has shown strong team basketball this season with multiple players stepping up for the team of coach Alex Pires. This could become very important in a difficult environment in the Coque against the team from Ettelbruck that earns the role of the slight favorite in this game. In their first matchup this season, Etzella won 94:82 on the road in Oberanven in late November.
