Year in review / De Basket Joresréckbléck 2022

Another year is coming to an end and it is time to take a look at the main events of the year 2022.

January 2022
1. The cup semi finals were postponed to March because of the ongoing Covid-19 situation. This chnge allowed us to play the cup final four with spectators 2 months later.

February 2022

2. After a stellar performance, our men’s national team was able to beat Albania in the Coque in Kirchberg, the final score was 86:75. ( –> Luxembourg beats Albania after a stellar performance (videos) )

March 2022

3. The cup final four was played in March. Résidence Walfer (women) and Basket Esch (men) were able to win the cup titles in 2022.

4. Gréngewald Hueschtert and AS Zolwer promoted to the LBBL in the men’s league.

April 2022

5. Magaly Meynadier extended her contract in Germany with the Saarlouis Royals.

May 2022
6. AB Contern was able to stay in the men’s LBBL after thrilling games in the relegation series against Mondorf. This newly introduced format with a best-of-3 series definitely brought a lot of action and excitement into the race for promotion and against relegation. 7. T71 Dudelange (women) and Amicale Steinsel (men) were able to win the LBBL championships in 2022. T71 was able to win the finals 2:0 against Résidence Walfer while Amicale won the men’s finals 3:2 against T71 Dudelange. Amicale entered the play-offs as the number 7 seed, T71 was the number 8 seed.


8. After several years as a professional player in Trier (Germany), Thomas Grün announced his return to Luxembourg (Basket Esch).

June 2022

9. Alex Laurent announced that he will play for the Gladiators Trier in the 2022/23 season.


10. Our men’s national team was in action on the road in Romania and lost 67:78. ( –> Luxembourg loses in Romania (stats and highlights) )

July 2022

11. Joy Baum announced that she will start her professional basketball career in Germany (Chemnitz).


12. Meanwhile, Ben Kovac announced that he will join the Champion of Slovakia, Patrioti Levice. Ivan Delgado joined Ehingen Urspring in a German during the off-season.

August 2022

13. Commissioner Alain Steffes received the big honor and was part of the Eurobasket 2022 in Germany.

September 2022

14. The LBBL season 2022/23 started in September.

October 2022

15. Two teams from Luxembourg, Gréngewald Hueschtert and T71 Dudelange, too part in the women’s EuroCup competition. While both clubs faced a a heavy program with a total of 6 group games ( and 2 qualification games for Gréngewald), they dominated the basketball headlines in Luxembourg to start the 2022/23 season.

November 2022

16. Our women’s national team was in action in the Women’s EuroBasket 2023 qualifiers. At home, the team of coach Mariusz Dziurdzia lost 57:77 against Slovakia ( –> Luxembourg plays well, loses 57:77 against Slovakia ) and two days later, the team clearly won in Switzerland ( –> Luxembourg beats Switzerland 81:43 (video highlights) )
